9.2  Inversion Layer Settings

By default, Cross-Country Soaring (CCS) will not create an inversion layer.  You may, however, create one to represent your real-world soaring area or to set up specific conditions for practice or competition.  Simply put, an inversion layer is a layer in which thermal lift or sink strength is diminished.  (For a more detailed description of inversion layers, click here.)  Only one layer can be defined in CCS.  The program can automatically randomly assign its settings, the layer can be disabled, or you can customize the layer to specific settings.  The inversion layer will affect the strength of scenery lift or sink, too, if present and enabled in CCS (see Customizing Soaring Conditions).  The following inversion layer parameters are customizable using the CCS Control Panel main window’s "Inversion Layer" section.

Likelihood

 

This is the percent likelihood that there will be an inversion layer.  For example, enter 0 if you don't want one, 100 if you do, or a number from 1 to 99 if you want to be surprised.

 

Thickness Range

 

"<minimum> to <maximum>" (feet, whole numbers, no commas)

 

This is the thickness, or height, of the entire layer, which tapers in strength from peak at its center to zero at its top and bottom.  Enter any two numbers to have CCS pick a random value between those two numbers.  Enter "0 to 0" to have CCS pick a random value in its default range of 500-1000.  Enter the same non-zero number for both minimum and maximum, if you want to define a specific value.  The minimum and maximum values allowed are 500 and 3000, respectively.

 

Peak Strength Factor

 

This is the percentage (whole number) decrease in thermal strength experienced at the strongest part of the layer.  Enter 0 to have CCS pick a random value in its default range of 10-50.  The minimum and maximum values allowed are 10 and 50, respectively.

 

Distance Below Ceiling

 

"<minimum> to <maximum>" (feet, whole numbers, no commas)

 

This is the distance, in feet, that the top of the layer is below the lift ceiling.  Enter any two numbers to have CCS pick a random value between those two numbers.  Enter "0 to 0" to have CCS pick a random value in its default range of 1000-2000.  Enter the same non-zero number for both minimum and maximum, if you want to define a specific value.  The minimum and maximum values allowed are 500 and 3000, respectively.
