1. GENERAL

1.1 Scope

This manual describes the installation, operation and maintenance procedures for SCL950 air-dielectric coaxial transmission line. Supplementary information or instructions may be supplied with individual components of the transmission line.

1.2 Application

This installation, operation, and maintenance manual provides a convenient reference for authorized operator/service personnel requiring technical information on general or specific transmission line components.

1.3 Description

Type SCL950 air-dielectric coaxial cable is specifically designed for extremely high-power transmit operation in both the AM and HF broadcast frequency bands.

The ten-inch, semiflexible, coaxial cable assemblies are typically shipped in 38-foot (11.6 metre) sections to avoid transportation and installation difficulties normally associated with continuous cable lengths of this size.

The cable assembly sections are pressurized before shipment and suitable for immediate installation to the cable support structure. All cable assembly connections are both electrically and mechanically durable. Redundant O-ring assemblies provide highly reliable joint pressure seals.

2. STORAGE

2.1 Facility Requirements

The cable sections are shipped in standard 40-foot (11.2-metre) open-top containers, and are specifically designed for continuous exposure to an outdoor environment. Therefore, an outdoor storage facility may be used as well as an enclosed facility for storage of the containers. Outdoor storage facilities should ensure containers are elevated above potential levels of standing water.

2.2 Access Requirements

Prior to shipment, each cable section is air pressurized to 10 psig (70 kPa). A pressure gauge, attached at the ANT end of each section, is used to monitor for excessive leakage of this air pressure. Store the containers to permit access to these gauges for visual inspection during storage (see Section 5.1.2).

2.3 Packaging

Cable sections should remain packaged in the original shipping container during storage of any duration. Prior to installation, store the cables on-site in these containers until ready for distribution.

CAUTION: Transporting improperly packaged cable sections can result in damage to these transmission line components.
3.0 INSTALLATION

This section describes requirements and step-by-step instructions for installing SCL950 cable sections (#207616) at high or low levels. It assumes that all columns, gantries, and other supporting structures for the cable are already installed, except for the cable hangers.

CAUTION: HANDLE THE SCL950 CABLE SECTIONS CAREFULLY TO AVOID PHYSICAL DAMAGE, AND ADEQUATELY SUPPORT THE CABLE TO PREVENT KINKING. To avoid kinking the cable under its own weight, the 38-foot (11.6 m) section must be supported at the center and both ends. When manually lifting or carrying a cable section, it is strongly recommended that four or more people be used. Multiple sections of assembled transmission line require cable support at 10-foot (3 m) intervals. In all cases, the relative height between adjacent supports must not allow the cable to assume a bend radius less than 200 ft (61 m).

CAUTION: KEEP THE INSIDE OF THE CABLE SECTION CLEAN DURING THE INSTALLATION. If sand, dirt, or other foreign materials enter into the cable section, it can cause high voltage failures.

KEEP THE CABLE SECTION PRESSURE PLATES ATTACHED, removing them only as part of the installation procedure. ALWAYS KEEP PROTECTIVE COVERINGS OVER OPEN CABLE ENDS, except during actual assembly to another section. (Plastic bags are provided for this purpose.) KEEP ALL TOOLS CLEAN to prevent transfer of foreign materials to critical areas. USE SPECIAL PRECAUTIONS IN HOSTILE ENVIRONMENTS. For example:

  • Use screens or other windshields during assembly.
  • Wet the ground area around the installation site.
  • Stop installation during severe winds.

    3.1 Installation Tools and Equipment

    3.1.1 General Equipment (not supplied)

This equipment is recommended for the distribution, handling, and general installation needs of SCL950 cable:

  • 40-ft (12.2 m) flatbed truck or trailer with tractor
  • 2.5-ton (2268 kg) crane
  • Wooden supports or trestles, 4 ft (1.2 m) high
  • 35-ft (10.7 m) nylon straps, at 3 inches (76 mm) wide
  • Cribbing to place under cable
  • Miscellaneous ropes and pulleys
  • Ladders or hydraulic lifts to allow work at height of 16 ft (4.9 m)
  • Assorted hand tools
