Low Capacity Community GSM Networks

Delivering Affordable, Compact GSM Solutions to Meet Low Capacity Requirements

Experience shows that traditional high capacity, large scale wireless networks are too costly and time consuming to deploy in areas considered too small, too remote, too low-density or too poor for cellular services. interWAVE's unique solution enables GSM network deployment to be viable in these markets.

interWAVE's portfolio is designed to offer a low entry cost and highly scaleable solution that satisfies low capacity coverage requirements using GSM technology. interWAVE's technology enables operators to open up new revenue opportunities by quickly and cost effectively deploying standalone GSM networks in community areas. interWAVE offers competitive solutions for start-up network configurations from 100 to 200,000 subscribers. As subscriber demand increases, the initial deployment can easily expand into a system that is capable of supporting more subscribers.

A Common Hardware Platform for all GSM Functionalities

The core of interWAVE's GSM solution is our Network-In-A-Box™ (NIB). The NIB is a fully integrated solution for small capacity requirements, combining both radio and switching capabilities in a cabinet that is not much larger than a standard PC tower. Based on an expandable architecture, this hardware platform can scale from a NIB to a network requiring multiple Mobile Switching Centers (MSC/VLR/HLR), Base Station Controllers (BSC), and Base Transceiver Stations (BTS). All GSM functionalities can be either incorporated in a single cabinet or housed in their own separate cabinets.

A standard interWAVE's WAVEXpress configuration (MSC/HLR/VLR, BSC & BTS), as represented in the diagram below, can support up to 5 BSC, 16 BTS or 30 Transceivers (TRX). It can inter-operate with existing network infrastructures. Its standard interfaces allow seamless network integration to other cellular networks and wireline telephone networks through ISDN, ISUP, R2 and MAP interfaces.

During the expansion phases, the initial investment remains protected. As the network grows beyond the capacity of a WAVEXpress configuration, multiple configurations can be incrementally built out and linked together to form a stand-alone GSM network.

Key Benefits to the Operator

Because of its unique architecture, interWAVE's wireless GSM networking solution delivers unparalleled value and provide the following benefits:
  • Provides low entry cost GSM products.
  • Accelerates return on investment: interWAVE's technology provides operators an incremental "build as you grow" approach, allowing network growth as opportunity demands.
  • Offers scalability. Operators must be able to scale their networks to meet constantly changing demands. The scaling flexibility of interWAVE's products allows operators to quickly expand their networks, adapt to market needs (capacity on demand), and aggressively grow their business, with minimum financial risk.
  • Allows seamless integration to existing wireless and wireline network infrastructures.
  • Allows unmatched speed of deployment and operation based upon a fully functional compact solution with a common hardware platform for all GSM functionalities. Deploying and activating a complete GSM network in an aggressive timeframe gives operators rapid time to market - a key advantage where multiple service providers are competing for the same subscriber base.
  • Offers a migration path to GPRS and 3G technologies.
