Removal of Protective Jacketing
Removing Plastic Coating. Dip the end of the fiber in methylene chloride for one minute. Pull off the softened jacket.

Removing Optional Indium Coating. Dip the fiber into an acid solution of Aqua Regia (3 parts concentrated Hydrocholoric Acid, 1 part concentrated Nitric Acid, and 4 parts water). The Indium will dissolve at room temperature in approximately 10 minutes.

Cleaving
Cleaving E-Series Fiber. With a diamond scribe. carefully scratch the surface of a stripped fiber. Bend the fiber perpendicularly to its longitudinal axis -or- fasten the fiber down and gently pull the end on the opposite side of the scratch. Both methods will produce an end face sufficient for launching or testing. The ends, however, should be inspected prior to splicing. If a better end face is required, repeat the above procedure.

D-Fiber Orientation. When an end of the fiber hangs freely, it bends slightly. The flat surface of the fiber is on the outside of the bend. This flat surface is parallel to the major axis of the elliptical core and the plane of polarizatin.

Cleaving D-Series Fiber. With a diamond scribe, carefully scratch the round surface (see orientation instructions) of a stripped fiber. Bend the fiber toward its flat surface until it breaks. As with E-fiber, inspect the ends before splicing.
